I know that people once lived here, and I have even met someone who remembers it as home. I often wonder what life was like within those walls, particularly in the depths of winter, when a concrete house in this exposed landscape must have been a cold place to be.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen I began working on this image, I let myself follow a feeling rather than a particular plan. I brought the building together with billowing clouds photographed separately, creating a sky that feels a little more imposing than the one above us on an ordinary day. Layers of texture add to the roughness of the scene, drawing the landscape around the house and holding it within the image.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is a vulnerability to this little building beneath such a vast sky, but there is strength in it too. The house is still standing, as are the bare winter trees around it. I find myself thinking about the people who have made their lives on the Maniototo, then and now, and the quiet determination it takes.
