Returning to Familiar Ground - New Exhibition
Jan 21, 2026
I am really pleased to be sharing my new exhibition, Familiar Ground: Land, Light, and Time, a collection of recent photographic works shaped by my ongoing relationship with the Maniototo District - the place I live, work, and call home. The exhibition will open with a relaxed public opening weekend on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February, from 10.00am to 3.00pm. Rather than a formal opening night, I am inviting people to drop in over the weekend during normal gallery hours, spend time with the work, and say hello.
The exhibition brings together a mix of recognisable views of the region, including strongly composed images made over the winter months, alongside more abstract and creatively layered works. These pieces reflect a more personal and emotional response to place. By returning again and again to familiar ground, I am interested in how subtle shifts in light, season, and perspective can slowly change what we notice. For me, this work speaks to ideas of home and belonging, and to the way land becomes part of lived experience, revealing meaning over time rather than all at once. Photography is my chosen medium and a tool that allows me to make art using colour, shape, texture, pattern, and graphic elements to communicate a feeling or message.
Familiar Ground continues my ongoing practice of creating thoughtful, place-based work that blends careful observation with personal reflection. The exhibition will run until the end of February, with works available to view and purchase during normal gallery hours at my gallery on Charlemont Street, Ranfurly, and online at www.janynefletcher.co.nz.
