Vein of Gold

Vein of Gold

There is a seam of gold that runs all the way through Central Otago.  For centuries, gold seekers from around the globe have ventured into this harsh yet stunning landscape, driven by dreams of fortune. Their journeys have left an indelible mark, shaping the region into what it is today.

In “Vein of Gold,” I tried to capture not just the physical presence of gold but the emotional and historical weight it carries. This piece reflects my interpretation of the struggles faced by those early pioneers (including some of my own ancestors) who braved desolate mountains, crossed swift rivers, and endured the unforgiving climate in their pursuit of wealth and survival.

The shimmering gold running through the scene symbolizes both the hope and the hardship of the gold rush era, a visual representation of the dreams that drove so many to this wild and untamed corner of the world. This artwork is not just a depiction of place, but a homage to the human spirit, perseverance, and the deep connection between people and the land.

“Vein of Gold” was proudly featured in my portfolio as NZIPP Landscape Open Photographer of the Year for 2024.  This high quality print is limited to an edition of five prints and is printed using archival pigment inks and fine art paper to give long lasting quality.
