Framed Photographic Print - Between Arrivals, Ranfurly Refreshment Rooms
This work reflects an exploration of architectural drawing and Art Deco form, inspired by the refreshment rooms of the former railway station in Ranfurly, Central Otago. Built to serve passengers passing through the Maniototo, the building becomes a symbol of pause rather than movement — a place designed for waiting, gathering, and brief moments of rest between journeys. The simplified geometry, stepped roofline, and strong horizontal bands draw on classic Art Deco motifs while celebrating the confidence and civic pride of rural design.
A clean, open composition allows space to play an essential role, echoing the wide skies and expansive plains of Central Otago. By stripping the scene back to line, rhythm, and subtle texture, the image invites a quiet reflection on time and transition — on what remains after the trains have gone. Suspended between past arrivals and imagined futures, the refreshment rooms stand as a still point in a landscape once defined by movement.
