Framed Photographic Print - Golden Progress
This image captures the historic poppet head of the Golden Progress Mine near Oturehua — one of Central Otago’s most recognisable remnants of the gold rush era. I’ve long been drawn to this weathered structure, standing as a symbol of persistence and ingenuity in a harsh landscape. After many visits and attempts, I finally found a way to portray it that felt both authentic and layered in history.
To create this work, I photographed original mining plans and documents from the CODC archives in Ranfurly and overlaid them with my image of the poppet head. The result combines the visual traces of human effort — both above and below ground — revealing a dialogue between the miners’ hand-drawn lines and the timber framework that once supported their ambitions.
